Puligny-Montrachet owes its full name to Jean-Edouard Dupard, the founder of Domaine Jean Chartron. In 1880 he was Mayor of Puligny and persuaded the city council to confirm a decision that the name of Montrachet - the most prestigious local growth name at the time - should be added to Puligny, the original name of the village, creating the now famous 'Puligny-Montrachet'.

Jean-Edouard Dupard was a cooper-craftsman who established the vineyard in 1859. Four generations have followed in his footsteps both in running the vineyard and acting as Mayors of Puligny-Montrachet.

The name Montrachet is an amalgam of 'mont' and 'rachet'. The 1839 cadastre (local plan) has many spelling variations including Mont rachez and Mont rachat, best explained as 'mont' meaning hill, and racez, rachat or rache being an early French word meaning scab. This description suits the Mont because it is so low, it hardly stands out from the surrounding plain.

The locals say that Montrachet is like the famous 'gougere', a small Burgundian cake made from cheese flavoured choux pastry and served with an aperitif.

1984 saw a change at Domaine Jean Chartron as it was then known, when Jean-René Chartron, the fourth 'winegrowing Mayor' in this remarkable family, had a chance meeting with an ambitious young Burgundian wine merchant called Trebuchet who wanted to set up his own company to enhance his ten years of experience as a manager of a wine firm in Beaune.

It was evident that they both had a mutual passion for Burgundy wines and Chartron et Trebuchet was formed. Its staff are equally dedicated and enthusiastic in following the spirit of the 'House', which is dedicated to the Burgundian tradition and sensitive to the latest oenological and viticultural developments.

Jean Michel Chartron (great-great-grandson of the founder over 150 years ago) joined the company in 1994 and has taken over the responsibility for sales and marketing management. He studied business and viti-viniculture in Paris, before joining the company.

The premises of Chartron et Trebuchet is located in the heart of the most prestigious white vineyards, so it is no surprise that they specialise in white wines, although they also produce excellent reds.

From pressing the grapes to bottling the wines, vinification and maturing of wines from the estate and the house are conducted with total respect for the local traditions.

The production of other estates is rigorously selected and brought to the winery as grapes or must so Chartron et Trebuchet maintain total control of the winemaking and ageing.

Chartron et Trebuchet produce some 600,000 to 700,000 bottles of wine every year.
