Louis IX 1214 - 1270.

King of France 1226 - 1270. Known as ‘Saint Louis’.

Son of Louis VIII and Blanche de Castille. His mother acted as regent until he became of age. He was a just and crusading ruler introducing many laws and legislating for the benefit of all Frenchmen. He also abolished duelling. He took part in two crusades, the first against the Sultan of Egypt. He was taken prisoner and on payment of a large ransom returned to France 1254. He died of ‘peste’, possibly a fever in 1270.
