He married the Aquitaine heiress, Eleanor of Aquitaine, but on his return from the second Crusade he repudiated her claiming they were too closely related although married for 15 years. After the annulment and the subsequent marriage of Eleanor to Henri II of England, France became increasingly unstable because much of the land was under English rule.
