Is it possible that this small village is as old as the vines that grow in the region? It is a Medieval village with records dating it from 1010 when it was called Archos (possibly the word is associated with Arch). It was subsequently known Castrum de Arcubus (Castle of Arcs).
Although one could rightly class Les Arcs as a modern village, the remnants of its historic, architectural past are still evident. It has all the feel of a Medieval village with its rising narrow lanes, old houses and mansions.
At one time, the village had three defence walls. Two were started in the 12th Century, the third being added during the 13th and 14th Centuries. The bell tower in the village was constructed in 1662 and was added to an existing building dating from the 13th - 14th Centuries.
