Autun

50 km west of the town of Beaune stands Autun, founded by the Roman Emperor Augustus. There are remains of what is believed to be one of the largest Roman Amphitheatres in Gaull and the remnants of a square tower, thought to have belonged to the Temple of Janus.

The early 12th-century Romanesque Saint Lazare Cathedral is justly famed for the tympanum above the main doorway, which depicts the Last Judgement in remarkable detail.
