Capital of Alsace and one of the biggest and most appealing cities in France, Strasbourg is the only French city on the River Rhine and is the terminus for the Marne/Rhine and Rhône/Rhine canals.
The European Parliament dominates most thoughts of Strasbourg along with the Council of Europe, but this city has more to offer than politicians, from its tourist hotel area to the red sandstone Gothic Cathedral with its amazing tower rising an impressive 142 metres.
Not far from the Cathedral can be found one of the oldest houses in Strasbourg dating from around 1467. It is a typical Alsatian house of the time and is ornately carved.
The prominent 18th Century Château of the Cardinal-Bishop family of Rohan stands next to the Cathedral and is now a museum.
