This small town at the far end of the plain from Reims, has a long history. It once boasted one of the biggest Hôtels of its day, The Hôtel de Metz. On the route from Paris, it was part of a chain of relays for coaches and their occupants travelling on what was then a long and arduous journey. Victor Hugo is reputed to have stayed here and written favourably of the town.
Its other claim to fame is a French delicacy, Pigs Trotters.
There is little to offer the visitor here, but a statue in the public gardens does commemorate Sainte-Ménehould as birthplace of Dom Perignon who perfected the art of blending and creating champagne.
